Akatsuki. The Akatsuki series is a unique line of jewelry featuring diamonds that appear to magically change color. When the ring is being worn, the diamonds have the bright white brilliance you would expect from a high quality piece of jewelry. When the ring is removed from the finger and tilted toward the light, the diamonds light up a dazzling red. This stunning effect is made possible by a patented setting configuration, whereas diamonds are set on the outside of the ring, while rubies (or sapphires) are set directly behind them on the inside of the ring. As light passes through the rubies, red light is projected into the diamonds, enabling them to glow a vibrant red. The Akatsuki series, which is Japanese for ‘dawn’, was inspired by the beauty of the rising sun along the horizon line and symbolizes the possibilities that each new day brings to us. Materials. As with all SATORU jewelry, each work of art begins with the selection of the finest materials available. To maximize the light’s passage through the gemstones, I use only high quality, Belgium cut, DEF/VS diamonds (or higher), and TOP RED rubies. An ideal-cut diamond’s proportions have a profound impact on light performance, or what we generally think of as sparkle. When a diamond is cut to the proper proportions, light is returned out of the top of the diamond. If it is cut too shallow, light leaks out of the bottom; too deep and it escapes out of the side. The Akatsuki series depends upon these rules of physics to work its magic. When the diamonds are viewed from head on, light enters the top of the stone and bounces back out with a brilliant white sparkle. When the diamonds are viewed at an angle and light shines on the rubies from behind, the red light is able to leak through the diamond. This is what creates the stunning effect of the Akatsuki series. Environmentally and Socially Conscience. Let’s face it. The jewelry business is an industry that derives all of its products from the earth, and relies heavily upon mining companies to generate source materials for their products. The sad fact is — mining is a very "dirty" business and the production of just one gold ring will generate five tons of environmental waste, contaminating water and lands which endangers the health and lives of humans and animals. All precious metals used at SATORU are recycled from the Earth’s existing metal supply, which means I DO NOT BUY metals from mining companies. I don’t believe in it, and, I simply don’t have to. All precious metals are purchased from refineries that exclusively recycle scrap metal purchased from jewelers. I only buy conflict-free diamonds from sources that are full participants in the Kimberley Process Certification System. This process, an international monitoring system, was created to eliminate the flow of "conflict or blood diamonds”. I believe it is our moral obligation to continually respect basic human rights around the world and to protect the environment by conserving energy and recycling. I feel good knowing that I have made environmentally and socially responsible choices, and I am sure you will too.
